Most students do not realize the concept of global engagement. They are too caught up in the present, and what directly effects them in their town or state. But the reality is this is a huge world and something going on in the Middle East or South Africa, we can effect or it can effect us. Being in the School of Global Management and Leadership, it is important for us to be educated on the entire world, and be understanding for all cultures.
Why would a college student want to become globally engaged? Bud Rock states that, "You will want to have the ability to solve problems, whether they are on a local scale or on a global scale and to work effectively with other cultures." In our careers we will be dealing with other cultures, religions, and much diversity. It is important for us to be open and understanding, and in order for this to happen we must put ourselves out there and become globally engaged.
Now that we know what exactly global engagement is and how detrimental it is to our future careers, you are probably wondering how do I get engaged? Bud Rock comments on this issue, "You will have a lot of choices in your academic career; courses to take, directions and programs of study to choose. Being globally engaged is really not an option at all. It’s a reality in your life. It will be a reality in your studies and it will be a reality in your careers." Get a passport so you are ready to travel. Take courses about another language or culture. Attend cultural events. Watch a foreign film. Study abroad. There are tons of ways at ASU to become globally engaged which will prepare you for your future career.
